Minutes of NINA Board of Directors Meeting

June 23, 2006
Northern Star office, Campus Life Building, NIU, DeKalb

Members present (8): Rick Nagel, Penny Wiegert, Sharon Boehlefeld, Colin O'Donnell, Greg Rivara, Joe Corrado, Jay Dickerson, Jim Killam.

Members absent (10): Roger Ruthhart, Randy Swikle, Pam Lannom, Jim Slonoff, Rich Rostron, Pete Nenni, Wally Haas, Lois Self, Lonny Cain, John Etheredge.

A quorum was not present, so board members used the meeting time to discuss plans for this year's fall conference.

Everyone liked Corrado's suggestion that the board use the conference as a kickoff to a yearlong NINA emphasis on newspapers serving and improving their communities. Rivara and the program committee will try to structure the fall conference around a theme of public service reporting. Speakers might include award-winning reporters, along with community leaders. Potential subtopics could be: how to identify an issue worthy of "project" reporting; how to establish and use community forums to improve your paper's journalism; how to do public service reporting without selling out journalistic independence or integrity. Also discussed was the idea of adding new emphasis / prestige to NINA's annual award for public service journalism, possibly even naming it after the late Marx Gibson.

All details will be finalized by the board's next meeting, Sept. 8.

Other business:
The workshops for high school advisers will be held Friday, Sept. 29, at three sites: The Daily Herald, the Rockford Register Star and a to-be-determined west or southwest suburban location. Killam will coordinate these soon with the education committee. Board members may be called upon to help with presentations.

Next board meeting: Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at the Northern Star, NIU.
